My female rabbit happened to give birth to one kit today and immediately ate it.?

Now here is the odd thing. She is obviously still loaded with kits, she looks like she is ready to pop. I have been breeding rabbits for a few years now and have never seen this happen. Is this common? she is in no distress at all, just going about her life as normal. My female rabbit happened to give birth to one kit today and immediately ate it.?
As far as any rabbit eating a baby rabbit, sometimes it will think that a baby rabbit is a mouse or something and destroy it. Sometimes stress may cause a rabbit to eat its young. Some think that there is something lacking in the diet. In case this is so, offer some alfalfa hay occasionally. If the doe eats the babies as she is giving birth, I think it is because she doesn't know what is coming out of her and will eat the babies as she would her afterbirth. This is caused by inexperience being a mother, though, and she should be given another opportunity.

In any case, do not tolerate a doe eating the young after her second or third litter. My female rabbit happened to give birth to one kit today and immediately ate it.?
I've had something similar happen, just once... my doe had a kit a few days prior to her approx. due date, and ate it. A few people I talked to said that she did so because it was premature (kind of like killing off the runt) and possibly stillborn. She had the rest of her litter a few days later, and didn't have a problem at all.

I'd say to get her palpated to make sure she is still pregnant, and if she is, watch her a bit closer to her due date. When she has the other kits, make sure that you watch her, and take them away at the first hint of aggression towards them. But if she's caring for them properly, then let her be. And if she is re-bred later on, make sure to watch her throughout her pregnancy, and be especially watchful of her diet and living conditions, to make sure that there are no stressers that could cause another incident.
It isnt very common but it does happen for some animals like fish. I have 2 rabbits and whenever they have babiies me take her away from them for a while jhust so that she wont eat them.
!!!! :@ :@ !!!!
