Is it right to pick a rabbit up by the ears?

my dads nearly 60 so hes old fashioned. My rabbit was running around the garden abd I couldnt catch him. so my dad tried picking him up my the ears and I went mad! But he said thats the correct way to do it.

is he right? im sure I read you are not meant to. He grew up on a farm so didnt they do that to slaughter themIs it right to pick a rabbit up by the ears?
No, you should carry them similar to the way you would cradle a football, with their head tucked in between your elbow. This makes them feel safe and supports their hind end which is very important. They are very sensitive in the lumbar spine area (lower back) and can seriously injure this area if not held properly or if they take a big jump.

Explain this to your dad in a way that doesn't make him feel like he's wrong.

Just say you did some research on the internet and explain picking them up by the ears, without lumbar spine support, can seriously injure them.Is it right to pick a rabbit up by the ears?
No, it's not right to do that but like you said, your dad is old fashioned and old habits don't die. That's just the most effective way he knows and was taught how to catch one. Just make sure you don't do that.
Absolutely not! Catch them by the ears without lifting and then put one hand under their bottom and lift.
in my opinion it's cruel and horrid(no offense), but some people think it's ok!
No way. That is soooo wrong. Picking the rabbit up by the ears can cause permanent injury. It's like someone coming up to you and picking you up by your ears. And I do not know anyone sane enough that would like that. I certainly wouldn't. No, the correct way is to lift them gently by the scruff with one hand and scoop him up with the other. As shone in the video provided:

no,it may injure your pet
I really don't like it when people do that. I do think it is the right way to pick them up, but I really don't recommend to do that.
No, the ears is not the way!

yes. It is the right way.Just like dogs.Their parents carry them at the back of the neck. But for our view, it look like they are biting them.Read the guide book for rabbits.Maybe u can borrowed it at the library.Take a good care of ur rabbit.Cheers :D
No no no
You're pulling on muscle and ear cartilidge, which can damage the rabbit (and be painful). Pick up by the loose back fur or with cupping under the body like for a cat. Those don't hurt the rabbit.

Old fashioned is right...better ways have been found to lift rabbits.
NO!
It may be better to pick them up from below and support there body than grab em by there ears so there body weight is hanging from them.
Definitely no.

Just because it is convenient for us to pick them up this way does not make it alright for the poor rabbit!

Put your hand underneath to support its` body weight and leave its` ears alone, don`t even stroke them.
You should never pick a rabbit up by his ears. I have struggled in the past trying to pick up my rabbit when he does not want to, you need to be firm and you can grab them by the scruff on there back near here head!! Sorry not to good at trying to explain what area this is, hopefully you know where the scruff is. And one you pick them up here support them under there back legs and just pull him in towards your chest. It does not hurt them at all, this is how there mom would pick them up.
no it hurts pull his ear hard for him and see if he likes it being old is no excuse for animal abuse
No that is not the correct way to do it because the ears of a rabbit are very sensitive, what you do is you grab the fur that is a little bit behind the ears and pick them up the rabbits don't even fell it when you do that good luck!

hope this helped!
no, it does hurt them, if you take them by the ears you should support their weight by a hand under their belly so it doesn't cause them to ';hang'; by their ears.
You can break the cartilage lifting them by just the ears. With some purebred rabbits though, for instance rex and mini rex, grabbing the scruff of their coat for extra security isn't good cause you can damage their fur. Many keepers of those rabbits will also hold onto their ears when they already have the rabbits weight supported.

It is much better to grab a rabbit by the scruff and ears, but, to immediately reach under and support their weight.

I can see catching them by the ears if they are in danger of getting lost and that's the first thing you can grab, but, you wouldn't want to just pick them up that way.
He is wrong! That could hurt the rabbit! The proper way to pick a rabbit up is to grab the folds of skin behind is head on its neck and pick it up there. Once you have it off the ground you support their backends with your other hand and that will make the rabbit feel safe.
You can pick a rabbot up by it's ears, but ONLY IF he or she is young. If the rabbit in question is over about a month, then don't. Mother rabbits pick their young up by the ears, but once they get bigger, with more muscle and body fat, it is possible to do SERIOUS damage to their ears and hearing. I wouldn't do this if I were you. With some breeds of miniatures this is acceptable, but with most this is a bad idea.
It's never been the correct way to pick up a rabbit. They need their back end supporting so scooping them up around the chest whilst holding the back end with the other hand is the correct way. Tell your Dad we'll be round to pick him up by his ears, if he doesn't cut it out!!
