at the moment i have an indoor hutch and at easter i am getting an outdoor one, and im wondering what to line the bottom with underneath the sawdust. if i put paper down my rabbit pulls it out and rips it up within 30 mins of being in there! just wondering what else i can useWhat do you line the bottom of a rabbit hutch with?
I was told to use Linoleum - supposed to be easy to wipe clean. Or try placing a small litter tray in the corner, a lot of bunnies only go in the one spot so you can train it to use the tray quite easily. What do you line the bottom of a rabbit hutch with?
Never use clumping litter this can get stuck in and to them when they use the bathroom unless it is an area that there is no way they can get too. I dont use anything under the bedding, I use carefresh and it works great on its own, for sawdust (I hope you mean wood chips all the dust in sawdust can cause resperitory problems as can cedar and pine) if you are having a problem with odor you can use baking soda underneath. Also I wanted to add that if your new hutch has wire flooring you will want to cover part of it, it is really hard on a bunnies feet to only have wire to stand on, also are you getting a new rabbit for the outside hutch, moving an indoor rabbit outside can be VERY stressful for it and it may even die from the stress, the best option is to keep it inside if it has been inside.
you shouldn't line the bottom of the hutch. there should be a mesh, that allows the poo and pee to fall thru, you can line a box below the hutch with plastic bags to allow easy cleaning, or you can store the hutch outside, then use the mess as fertilizer
i line the bottom tray with clumping cat litter, keeps the smell way, and easy to clean.
Straw
I always lined the hutch with plenty of paper (and yes they love to tear it up) and then put hay or straw over the top. Just make sure it's cleaned and replaced regularly. Rabbits like to eat the hay, that's why I tended to use that over straw.
My mother always used straw.
The bottom of the cage was some kind of tight wire, it had Little squares.
I remember weekly taking everything out %26amp; hosng down the cage.
Good luck.
I always used newspaper with my rabbits - but I know what you mean about them pulling t out and ripping it!! Try drawer liners, I found that worked quite well although they always manage to rip it a bit but not as much as the newspaper.
Many will suggest to have a wire floor...do not do this, it leads to nasty feet/nail problems over time.
Many use a scrap of lino, but I prefer to use something they can wear their nails down on, even if it is only a small area, and use concrete patio squares/blocks.
You may wish to look to the house rabbit society (do a yahoo search) and seek their advice...they are a fabulous organization.
Newspaper to absorb the urine and such than hay for comfort. They'll have so much fun with they hay they may ignort the paper. give them plenty of things to munch so they'll stay away from the paper.
yeah i had that with my rabbitts, they dont like the newspaper underneath. i just put lots of sawdust ontop of the wood. then just put lots of hay on, so long as you clean it out regularly it will be ok.
newspaper, saw dust or place it on grass

P.S. rabbits shouldn't live outdoors. They can be attacked by wild animals, get flystrike, freeze or get heat exhaustion to name a few problems. Check out www.rabbit.org.
