She only had one baby (is that odd?). She did pull fur off her chest three days ago, but she had the baby in another spot of the cage where she had kicked ALL of the bedding away. I am scared to death to move or touch anything for fear that she will abandon or kill the baby. Also, she is a first-time mother. Help please!!Help!!!!!!!!! My rabbit had a baby and it is not in a nest. What should I do?
Calm down... it's ok... if she's tame she wont kill, or a\bandon the baby just beacuse you touch it oncce or twice. carfully check where she tossed the fur and bedding for other kits if there are none and she had this one not too long ago she probly isnt done... is the kit large? wait... what kind of rabbit? if rex or about that size if the kit is bigger than about 3 in. long and 1-2 around she might be done and only have the one (not uncommon with first time mothers) ok... so take the bedding and put it back in her box... make a cup(?a depression) in the fur and put the kit in this( along with any others that might be in the fur where she put it) and leave her be for a while... check on her in a while to see if there are any more but be quiet and just look... try not to agitate her too much... instinct should tell her what to do... we used to have does who would birth on the bottom of the cage instead of in the nestbox... all you have to do is place them in the box and she will take over from thereHelp!!!!!!!!! It is odd and you need to find out if there are babies still inside that may risk dying and may be a serious health issue to mom. My girlfriend had a bunny that she mated and the babies never came because she didn't know to check her 6 weeks after they mated. She died and I am assuming it was because the she wasn't able to deliver.
Need to know how old the bunny is, is it her first litter. Some times the uterus gets weak and can tear and the babies die and get stuck or can leave the uteren cavity and be in her body elsewhere. This happened to my bunny after 3 litters and she was approx 4 years old. This is also why fewer kittens were born. If you want to keep her a long time, bring her to the vet (specialized vet only - exotic) . He can extray to see whats going on and she if she is in any danger and maybe you might consider spaying her.
odds are she wont kill or abandon the baby if the mom knows your scent. Do you feed her every day? then she does! heres is what you can do: get a nestbox (or a cardboard box) and cut it so the mom can hop into it. them put cotton balls all over in there. next put the baby inside it. make sure that mom knows that she is in there! it is not odd for a first time mother to have just one kit. hope this works for you!!
dont panic, she knows what shes doing, she'll have her maternal instinks, but if she rejects or shows no intrest in the babies then call the vet and ask for advice, the vet might say if rejected you could hand rear them, but if she does show any sign of neglet to her babies call the vet.
u should move the baby in the bedding it will be fine. watch the baby and mama for a while to see what happens. if the mama kicks it out again, doesnt feed it, or tries to eat it take her out and try to hand feed the baby or contact a vet for more advice.
